Format

Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

Example

Book with two authors

Format

Last Name, First Name of first author, and First Name Last Name of second author. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

Example

Stevens, Mark, and Annalyn Swan. De Kooning: An American Master. Knopf, 2004.

Book with three or more authors

Format

Last Name, First Name, et al. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

Example

Fassenden, Ralph J., et al. Organic Laboratory Techniques. 3rd ed., Cengage, 2001.

 

Note how the 3rd edition is treated. Title. 3rd ed., Publisher, date. 

Chapters from an anthology

Format

Last Name, First Name. "Title of Essay." Title of Collection, edited by Editor's Name(s), Publisher, Year, Page range of entry.

Example

Carman, Travers. "Mac: The Story of a Dog of Honor."  In Dogs We Trust : An Anthology of American Dog Literature, edited by Jacob F. Rivers III and Jeffrey Makala. U of South Carolina P, 2019, pp. 101-110.


                             When citing university publishers, such as University of South Carolina Press, abbreviate University to U and Press to P

                             When citing publishers, omit business abbreviations, like corp. inc., co.

                             Page numbers are always preceded by pp.

                             The author listed (Carman, Travers) is the author of the essay or chapter in the collection. If there is no editor, leave that out.

Book with editor(s) and no author

Format

Last Name of Editor, First Name, editor(s). Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

Example

Tallett, Frank and D.J.B. Trim, editors. European Warfare, 1350-1750. Cambridge UP, 2010.
