APA Guide--EC3

Basics of APA

APA Format:

Author. (Date). Title in sentence case. Source.

Common citation errors

Author names:

APA is gender neutral, so you will not include first names in any citation, only the last name followed by first and middle initial.

Example of names in APA format: Smith, G.V. & Johnson, H.

Dates

Dates are formatted (Year, Month day).

Exceptions: If you only have the year, just include the year in parenthesis. If there is no date listed, type (n.d.) for no date

Example of date in APA format: (2022, July 17)

Titles:

Titles of articles, books and web pages are in sentence case. Capitalize the first word of the title, any proper words, and the first word following a colon. See specific resource rules to determine if the title should be italicized.

Example of title in APA format: Homes in Erie County sold for lower prices recently: See how much here

(In example above, note that "Erie County" is capitalized because it's a proper name and "See" is capitalized because it follows a colon)
