What is a personal interview?

Personal Interview

A personal interview is one where you are gathering information from a person you are communicating with via talking to them in-person, phone, e-mail or any other means. It does not mean an interview that was published in a newspaper, magazine, blog, or any other source. 

In-person or telephone interview

Typically, you do not cite personal interviews in APA, but sometimes a professor requires that you provide a record of the interview on your references page.

Format

Name of person being interviewed. (Date). Communication type

Example

Wells, S. (2021, April 1). Personal communication [Personal interview]

Example--In-text citation

In my interview with Steven Wells, he mentioned that the job market was promising for circus performers (personal communication April 1, 2021). 

OR

The job market for circus performers is considered "promising" by some (S. Wells, personal communication, April 1, 2021).
